SEEKING REMEDY: Heavy vehicle drivers staging a road blockade on Nataraja Theatre Road in Tirupur on Wednesday.

TIRUPUR: Irritated by the continuous digging on the already ravaged Nataraja Theatre Road here, heavy vehicle drivers on Wednesday blocked the road by stopping vehicles right at the middle of the road. The traffic went haywire for nearly two hours in the town. The agitators withdrew their protest after the police intervention.

A busy stretch and the only way for heavy vehicles that proceed from old bus stand to Avanashi, Erode, Perumanallur and northern parts of Tirupur, was completely damaged for almost two years. The frequent digging for the water supply and under ground drainage totally ravaged the road.

The contractors have again dug up the stretch near Noyyal bridge and a vehicle was overturned here on Wednesday. This prompted the drivers to stage a road roko. Municipal sources say that they are ready to take up the work immediately as tenders have also been awarded to relay the road at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh.

Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan said that they were ready to start the work immediately but the contractors of the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited were yet to finish their job.

Sources in the NTADCL said that they had almost completed the work but some final touches had to be given to join the pipelines for UGD. The agitators warned the officials to complete the dug up work in a time bound manner.
