Adversity pushes one to creativity. Situations like mounting garbage heaps, city plunging into darkness due to non-burning of streetlights and the general loss of city's beauty have prompted Shaji Kallayi to perform solo on the drum at Kidson Corner in the city at 3.30 p.m. on Friday. Shaji was in news when he presented solo performances for AIDS patients, expressing solidarity with Adivasi agitation at Muthanga and for empathising with sex workers in the past. Even though Kozhikode is soon to be declared a `clean city,' it is still stinking at various places. According to the artiste, Mananchira Square, the cultural landmark of the city, is fast turning into a haven for anti-social elements. Streetlights are not burning in many areas of the city. So, Shaji is gearing up for his next `crusade.'
