dated June 16, 1956: Quake havoc

About 600 people lost their lives when earth tremors rocked large parts of Afghanistan. The tremors, Afghanistan's worst in recorded history, varied in intensity and were strongest in the mountainous parts. A number of people were buried under the debris of collapsed houses in Kabul. The first series of tremors were felt on June 10. Tremors continued at intervals for the succeeding four days.
