MUMBAI: The rupee held steady on Thursday against the U.S. currency at 45.98/99 a dollar after a firm start on good trade inflows and fall in dollar against the world currencies.

In an active trading at the interbank foreign exchange market here, the Indian unit opened strong at 45.90/92 against Wednesday's close of 45.98/99 and after rising further to a high of 45.8700, fell to a low of 46. Later, it recovered on good inflows and closed at the previous day's level of 45.98/99.

The Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate for the U.S. dollar at Rs. 45.91.
