Pondicherry: One hundred and sixteen candidates have filed nominations for the Karaikal municipality's 18 wards. State Election Commission Secretary (Headquarters) Ragesh Chandra said here on Thursday that five candidates, including three party-sponsored nominees, had filed nominations for the post of chairman of the Karaikal municipality, which is reserved for women from the general category.
Triangular contest
Four candidates (including two party-sponsored candidates) have filed nominations for election to the post of chairman of Mahe municipality (open, general), while election to the post of chairman of the Yanam municipality (reserved for Scheduled Castes) will see a triangular contest involving a Congress nominee and two Independents.
50 file papers
Mahe municipality has 15 wards and Yanam 10. Fifty candidates have filed papers for the Mahe municipal election and 20 for Yanam. Two candidates were declared elected unopposed during scrutiny, leaving 18 candidates to contest the remaining eight wards in Yanam. The first phase of elections in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam will be held on June 24. Five commune panchayats with village panchayats under their purview in Karaikal will go to polls on June 24 with 766 candidates contesting the 258 posts of councillors in commune panchayats, ward members of village panchayats and village panchayat presidents.
