Cuddalore
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi has said that measures had been taken to check the outbreak of chikungunya in Cuddalore district. Mr. Bedi said that if people adopted precautionary measures, the spread of disease could be halted. The symptoms of the disease, spread through mosquitoes, are swelling of the joints and pain, high fever, headache and vomiting. The condition could last from one week to several months.
`Avoid water stagnation'
People should ensurethat the environment around their homes is kept clean. Discarded tyres, drums, plastic containers, mud pots, plastic cups as well as bottles are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. They should therefore should be removed. Moreover, water should not be allowed to stagnate, and people should drink only boiled water.
No vaccine
If any one developed the above-mentioned symptoms, they should be immediately taken to nearby Primary Health Centres or Government hospitals. Mr. Bedi cautioned that since there was no vaccine for the disease, preventive measures were essential.
