A dreary day's proceedings

Chennai: Enthusiasm was the key element. That perhaps compensated for the dreary day's proceedings on day one of the Federation Cup National junior athletics meet at the J.N. Stadium on Thursday. The humid weather impacted on the quality of performances.

By the end of the long evening, Tamil Nadu's N. Vadivelu (Madras Christian College) set a new meet record in pole vault scaling 4.61 metres to obliterate the record of 4.60 set by Praveen Kumar of Haryana at Bangalore in 2001. Vadivelu went for 4.70m but failed.

Mr. Walter Davaram, president Tamil Nadu Athletics Association, inaugurated the meet.

The results: Junior Men: 5,000m: 1. Arvind Kumar Yadav (UP) (15:04.02s), 2. Muhammad Yunus (Mah) (15:05.53), 3. Sanjeev Kumar (Jharkhand) 15:09.49s.

Pole vault: 1. N. Vadivelu (TN) (4.61m, NMR), 2. Mulayam Singh Yadav (UP) (4.20m), 3. K. Rajesh (TN) (4m).

Hammer throw: 1. Diwakar Singh (UP) (64.24m), 2. Lokesh Yadav (UP) (56.33m), 3. Harshan Meet Singh (Punjab) (55.13m).

Junior Women: 5,000m: 1. Sangeetha Yadav (UP) (18:08.81s), 2. Kiran Tiwari (Uttranchal), (18:26.57s), 3. KSH Romika Devi (Man) (18:36.10s).

Discus throw: 1. Priyanka Bhanot (Delhi) (43.02m), 2. Indu Bala (Har) (41.10m), 3. Babbli (Har) (39.58m).

Long jump: 1. P.K. Priya (Ker) (6.12m), 2. M.A. Prajusha (Ker) (5.93m), 3. Mayookaha Johny (Ker) (5.87m).

High jump: 1. N.K. Siji (Ker) (1.60m), 2. Mallika Mondal (WB) (1.60m), 3. K. Sariga (Ker) (1.60m).
