Chennai: Rob Sutherland had his emotions and his game in his grasp for just about a few minutes, after which he threw it all away, losing to second seed and defending champion Ritwik Bhattacharya 9-11, 4-11, 6-11 in the first round of the fourth ICL Chennai Open (PSA) squash championship, at the ICL-TNSRA Squash Academy, on Thursday. Ritwik quickly overcame the least threatening of sluggish starts, to display a brand of squash that did his title defence no harm. His shots were well directed; especially the occasional soft touches that got Sutherland into a couple of frustrating tangles. Saurav Ghosal put up a good performance to down qualifier Gaurav Nandrajog 11-5, 11-10 (2-0), 11-5, while Parthiban Ayappan went down to Tom Richards 9-11, 7-11, 5-11. The results (Indians unless specified): First round: Yasir Butt (Pak) bt Harinderpal Singh 11-5, 11-6, 11-7; Wai Hang Wong bt Marton Szaboky (Hun) 11-8, 11-3, 11-3; Ritwik Bhattacharya bt Rob Sutherland (Wal) 11-9, 11-4, 11-6; Dylan Bennett (Ned) bt Timothy Arnold (Mas) 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7; Majid Khan (Pak) bt Neil Hitchens (Eng) 11-6, 11-7, 11-7; Tom Richards bt Parthiban Ayappan 11-9, 11-7, 11-5; Saurav Ghosal bt Gaurav Nandrajog 11-5, 11-10 (2-0), 11-5; Khayal Muhammad Khan (Pak) bt Naresh Kumar 11-6, 11-10 (5-3), 11-7.
