JAIPUR: Two Rajasthan-based companies, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) and Shree Cement Limited, are among this year's recipients of the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA) 2006. The awards, instituted by the World Environment Foundation, are given in recognition of healthy environment practices adopted by the companies to maintain ecological balance and sustainable growth. HZL, a part of the Vedanta Resources Plc., is India's largest producer of zinc and lead. HZL has smelter plants in Chanderiya and Debari in south Rajasthan and at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The zinc mines are located in Dariba, Rampura, Agucha and Zawar in Rajasthan. The award has been given to HZL's Vishakhapatnam smelter plant. Shree Cement Limited, situated at Beawar in Ajmer district, claims to be the largest single location cement plant in North India with a production capacity of 45 lakh tones a year. The company found a place for itself from the 250 applicants for the award for its energy conservation techniques and adoption of environment-friendly technologies. K.Shivaprasad, unit head of the Vishakhapatnam Zinc Smelter, HZL, and R.Bhargava, General Manager, Environment, Shree Cement, received the award on behalf of their respective companies.
