A democracy for "rich and elite:" Arundhati Roy

NEW DELHI: Writer Arundhati Roy on Thursday said democracy in India was "only for the rich and the elite." She accused the Government of not lending an ear to mass movements in the country.

"The concept of Indian democracy is the biggest publicity scam of this century. Holding elections every five years does not necessarily mean that our country enjoys a democracy," Ms. Roy said here.

The meeting was organised to demand the withdrawal of criminal charges framed against CPI(M-L) general secretary Dipankar Bhattaccharya by the Jharkhand Government.

The Booker Prize winner termed the widely accepted concept in Europe and the U.S. that India was the largest democracy in the Third World as a "misconception."
