CHANDIGARH: Haryana Power Utilities have decided to lay distribution cables underground through ducts and a pilot project would be launched in the industrial districts of Gurgaon and Panipat initially to improve the power distribution system, according to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Presiding over a meeting to review the functioning of the Power Utilities, he said the modalities for implementation of the pilot project would be finalised shortly. It was also decided to speed up the work to segregate the urban and rural feeders and complete the entire project in next 18 months. The segregation of the feeders would help in stabilizing the supply of power in urban as well as rural areas. The Power Minister, Venod Sharma, said the programme to shift electricity meters from within the boundaries of each complex to outside and install these at a common place in a cluster had started yielding encouraging results as the line loses in such areas had shown a marked decrease. Initially this project is being implemented in the sectors developed by the HUDA and markets. Mr. Sharma said a target had been set to reduce line losses by more than six per cent during this year. Mr. Hooda directed that both units of the 300 MW thermal power plant being set up at Yamunanagar should be operational on schedule in November 2007 and March 2008, respectively.
