Cell phones can kill

Traffic police cracks down on use while of mobile phones while driving

CHENNAI: Susil Mary (23) of Jyoti Nagar, Annanoor was run over by a goods train near Tirumullaivoyal railway station on Tuesday while crossing the railway track.

Police said the girl, who was talking on a mobile phone, died on the spot. She was on her way to meet some friends when she was run over around 11 a.m.

Avadi Government Railway Police are investigating.

Traffic Police conducted a drive on Thursday and Friday last week against the use of cell phones while driving.

Officers said they booked 350 cases against violators. The maximum violations were by two-wheeler riders, a senior officer said. Violators were asked to pay a fine of Rs 1,100 each.

Police said some 15-20 accidents are attributable every month to people speaking on mobile phones. Two accidents were reported last week in which two-wheeler riders died because they were talking on their mobile phone.
