NEW DELHI: The first of a series of coordination committee meetings planned by the BJP to ensure harmony between the party and its governments was held here on Thursday with Chhattisgarh in focus. At the last national executive meeting, the party decided to hold coordination committee meetings here under the nose of senior leadership. Those who attended Thursday's meeting included the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani, party chief Rajnath Singh and senior leaders Jaswant Singh, M. Venkaiah Naidu and Sanjay Joshi, besides Chief Minister Raman Singh, Chhattisgarh `prabhari' Rajendra Sinh Rana and some Ministers. Mr. Rajnath Singh is reported to have said the party's job was to convey the people's views, and spread information about developmental works and other schemes undertaken by the Government. It was suggested that Ministers during tours meet people as well as party workers, and visit the party office. This exercise would boost the morale of the organisation. Mr. Advani reportedly suggested that as in Parliament, the BJP's legislature wing meet weekly when the Assembly was in session. The Government must not only do good work but also ensure that its "behaviour" towards the people was "civilised and polite."
Salwa Judam
Briefing reporters, party leader Siddharth Nath Singh said Mr. Vajpayee brought up the Salwa Judam (peace campaign) scheme operating in naxal-affected areas. The overall view was that the scheme was good. Mr. Vajpayee felt that more development works should be undertaken in those areas.
