MADURAI: Special inspection teams deputed by the State Government have begun to visit arts and science colleges to check the records related to collection of fees and admission procedures.

With the colleges reopening on Wednesday after vacation and admissions for under-graduate courses under way, officials are making surprise visits to look into the records and see if there is any violation of Government norms.

"Erring colleges will be taken to task. Admissions for all courses must be done as per Government stipulations and we have already communicated to colleges to follow the norms," S. Udayabaskaran, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, told The Hindu on Thursday.

He said the guidelines for admissions and fees should be followed by every college including autonomous colleges "and parents can bring to the department's attention if there is any specific complaint against a college."

Stating that there would not be any hesitation to initiate action against the erring college, Mr. Udayabaskaran said the inspection teams would verify all records and even parents would have the right to look into the admission list.

    In letter and spirit

The Joint Director said that the Government was particular that admissions were held as per rules and that colleges adhered to norms in letter and spirit.

All colleges- both urban and rural- would be covered during the inspections that would continue till the admissions were completed, he said.

    Vacancy list

The Office of Joint Director of Collegiate Education here has collected particulars from all aided colleges about the vacancies in teaching and non-teaching positions.

Details of vacancy position in all colleges had been forwarded to the State Government as per instructions, Mr. Udayabaskaran said.
