  • "Sonia Gandhi instrumental in bringing demolitions and sealing to an end in the Capital"
  • Development of the JJ clusters to be taken up: Ajay Maken
  • Similar camps planned for other blocks of the Capital

NEW DELHI: Stating that the Congress had always stood by the common man and this had been reflected time and again in its actions and policies, the party general secretary in charge of Delhi affairs, Ashok Gehlot, on Wednesday exhorted the party workers in Delhi to gear up for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls scheduled for early next year.

Addressing a one-day training camp organised by the Bawana block here, Mr. Gehlot said Congress president Sonia Gandhi was very much concerned about the interests of the common man. Referring to Delhi, he said that Ms. Gandhi had been constantly monitoring the situation and was instrumental in bringing demolitions and sealing to an end in the Capital.

He also complimented the Delhi Congress leaders for making that extra effort to ensure that the people of Delhi got relief and this had resulted in enactment of the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act 2006.

Urging party workers to fan out to various parts of the Capital to spread the achievements of the UPA Government, Mr. Gehlot praised the Bawana MLA Surinder Kumar for organising such a camp.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken announced that the Union Government was in the process of framing a new policy for JJ clusters, vendors and hawkers so that they do not face displacement time and again. Spelling out the commitment of the Congress-led Government at the Centre to protect the interests of people of Delhi, Mr. Maken said it was being planned that in-situ development of the JJ clusters be taken up and also low cost houses and shops be provided to the poor in various parts of Delhi.

He also indicated setting up of hawking zones in different areas for which sites were being identified. This would ensure that people especially the poor were not shifted out to distant places from their present place of work.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit while detailing achievements of her Government informed that both water and power situation had improved tremendously in the Capital and exhorted the Congress workers to create awareness about the achievements of the Delhi Government. DPCC president Ram Babu Sharma announced that similar camps would be organised in other blocks of the Capital within two months time. Also present on the occasion was Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar.
