dated June 17, 1956: Vice-President in Moscow

The Vice-President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, welcomed what he called the Soviet attempts to "liberalise the regime" when he flew into Moscow on June 15 for a ten-day goodwill visit. Speaking at the airport, on his arrival from Warsaw, Dr. Radhakrishnan said, "Many countries are adopting Socialist aims and you are attempting to liberalise your regime. If these changes continue I am convinced that many difficulties will be eliminated and the nightmare in which we lived before may become a thing of the past." The Vice-President was greeted at airport by Mr. Georgi Malenkov, Mr. Lazar Kaganovitch and Mr. Maxim Saburov, three of Russia's top 11 leaders.
