PONDICHERRY: The management of the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Krishi Vigyan Kendra (PKKVK) located on the Pondicherry-Ousteri road, on Friday, demonstrated the working of the innovative implement (Paddy Transplanter). This was done to highlight that at no point of time should agricultural works suffer any setback either because of shortage of manpower or segregating the farm works. The Paddy Transplanter is an indigenously devised mechanised implement, which would give hope to farmers and farmland owners of transplanting seedlings without interruption. A release from the Kendra said that the transplanter could do the work of transplanting paddy seedlings on three acres a day. To transplant the paddy seedlings on an acre of land the machine would take three hours and would consume three litres of fuel. It could plant seedlings in eight rows at a time. It would transplant up to a depth of six centimetres and seedlings would suffer no damage. Thiswould save the cost of transplanting of seedlings to 50 per cent of the normal investment. The preparation of the paddy seedlings that would be transplanted by the equipment should be done on mat nursery method (simplest way of preparation of paddy nurseries than by traditional system. Among other things the mat system of preparation of nurseries would involve 20 kilograms of seeds against 40 kilograms needed under the traditional system). Those present for the demonstration included the chairman of PKKVK Nanda Jayaraman, the Joint Director of Agriculture (Training and Visit system) Vasnatha Kumar, the Additional Director Hussain the Training Associates V.Kumar (Extension wing) and Rollin Baskar (Agronomy) and the Junior Entomologist and a large number of farmers. Officials explained the features of the implement and also the highlights of the mat nursery system.
