The Da Vinci Code

The controversy surrounding the film The Da Vinci Code is unwarranted. It has been released in many States. It does not seem to have made any negative impact on Christians. It should be left to the viewers to decide whether the movie is an entertainer or something more. The State Governments that have either banned or suspended its screening should understand that secularism does not mean protecting the interests of a single community.

True, artists have the licence to distort history. Even Shakespeare and Scott exploited this licence to create enduring works of art. But freedom of expression, to be universally acceptable, should be circumscribed by discreet restraints, honoured by moral and religious traditions and sanctioned by reason.

Art that does not conform to these principles is pseudo art. Vulgarising religious and historical figures for commercial gain in the name of art is indeed a fraud committed on religion and humanity.
