Reconsider decision on Shashi Tharoor, says Swamy

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has urged the Government of India to reconsider its decision to propose Shashi Tharoor for the post of U.N. Secretary-General.

"India is now an emerging global power and a strong candidate for a permanent seat with a veto on the U.N. Security Council. Hence, it will be inappropriate to have an Indian as the Secretary-General of the United Nations," he said in a statement here.

Dr. Swamy noted that if elected as Secretary-General, Mr. Tharoor "will have to bend over backwards to prove that he is not favouring India, and hence he will be of no use to the nation. It is better India earns Asian goodwill by proposing a name from a smaller Asian country for the post."
