Pethaperumal will contest Oulgaret Municipal chairman as Independent

Pondicherry: Former Health Minister V. Pethaperumal said here on Friday he would not withdraw his nomination for the post of chairman of Oulgaret Municipality and sought DMK support for his candidacy.

Mr. Pethaperumal was a special invitee in the Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee, but filed his papers as an Independent, though the Congress fielded a candidate for the post of chairman.

Mr. Pethaperumal called on the Convenor of the Pondicherry State unit of the DMK, R.V. Janakiraman at the DMK party office earlier seeking the DMK's support for his candidature.

Mr. Pethaperumal told The Hindu that the Congress was adopting an autocratic approach in finalising its candidates. He said he had applied for the Congress ticket to contest the election but was denied the opportunity.
