A break from tradition

Special Correspondent

Thanjavur: The practice of offering pujas to Lord Anjaneya and Lord Ganesha temples at the Grand Anicut in the presence of VIPs just before lifting the shutters for kuruvai cultivation was changed this year. It was a surprise to many — farmers, people and presspersons — who visit the Grand Anicut every year. State Ministers K.N. Nehru, U. Mathivanan and Union minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam Collectors and PWD engineers walked straight to lift the shutters without visiting the temples. PWD engineers performed the pujas early in the morning. The Ministers and the Collectors lifted the shutters at 9 a.m.
