VELLORE: Nearly 1.5 lakh Plus Two vocational stream students studying in government and government aided higher secondary schools in Tamil Nadu, have got their textbooks after 28 years thanks to persistent efforts by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Kazhagam. When the 10 + 2 + 3 pattern of education was introduced in the state in 1978, the higher secondary system was classified into the academic stream and the vocational steam. State general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Kazhagam, S.N. Janardhanan, said the Tamil Nadu Textbook Society did not publish textbooks for the vocational subjects.

Mr. Janardhanan said the government had published guides for teachers for each subject, which was supplied to schools. But the students had to depend on the general books available in the market and college textbooks. Repeated representations by the association to the government to publish textbooks for the vocational subjects did not yield positive result till the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government announced the scheme of issuing textbooks free of cost to all Plus Two students. In June 2005, the government constituted a committee to initiate a process of making available textbooks for the vocational subjects. It began issuing them this month.
