Bangalore: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has said that it is improper for an Indian to be the Secretary-General of the United Nations. According to him, the position should go to one of the smaller Asian nations. In a statement here on Friday, he said the decision of the United Progressive Alliance Government to propose the name of Shashi Tharoor for the post of U.N. Secretary-General should be reconsidered. The decision appeared to be prompted by a desire of the Congress to reward Mr. Tharoor for some obscure reasons that had nothing to do with national interests. India was now an emerging global power and a strong contender for a permanent seat with a veto in the U.N. Security Council.
