Bangalore: The `Janata Darshan' programme of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy

will be held at his home office, `Krishna,' between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, according to an official press release. — Special Correspondent

Manmohan to lay foundation stone

BANGALORE: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone of the 33-km Bangalore Metro Rail project on June 24. The programme is likely to be held at the Police Parade Grounds here at 3.30 p.m., according to the tentative schedule.

In the first phase, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) Ltd. proposes to construct an elevated metro rail section from Byappanahalli to Mahatma Gandhi Road.

BMRC Managing Director told The Hindu that the work of shifting utility lines would begin immediately after the foundation stone was laid. — Staff Reporter

V.R.S. Natarajan gets fellowship award

Bangalore: V.R.S. Natarajan, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd., received the Annual Fellowship Award 2006 from the Indian Institution of Production Engineers for his outstanding contribution to the field of manufacturing. Lt. Gen. Jamwal speaks at Infosys Academy

Bangalore: Lieutenant General K.S. Jamwal, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Army Training Command, delivered an address on the `Art of Leadership' at the Infosys Academy in Mysore on Friday. He emphasised the relevance of character and knowledge as the pillars of leadership.

Rashtriya Hindu Sena to stage protest

Bangalore: Rashtriya Hindu Sena State unit president Pramod Mutalik on Friday urged the Union Government to exert pressure on Pakistan and Bangladesh to protect temples in those countries.

He criticised the Centre for not seriously taking up the issue of the demolition of a Krishna temple in Lahore and an ancient Dakeshwari temple in Dhaka. The sena would observe a Statewide protest on June 21 against the demolitions, he said.

Addressing a press conference here, he took exception to a fatwa issued against Muslim children singing `Vande Mataram.' Those who issued such a fatwa should be arrested, he said.

Mr. Mutalik demanded the release of seven Hindu youths who, he alleged, had been falsely implicated in connection with the recent violence in Tilaknagar here.

Two die, eight injured in road accident

HASSAN: Two persons died and eight were injured when a vehicle by which they were travelling collided with a lorry near Nidugodikoodige village in Sakleshpur taluk on Friday. The police said Nagarathnamma (50) of Manikyanahalli in Pandavapura taluk and Padma (51) of Mysore died on the spot. The vehicle was proceeding to Mandya from Dharmasthala when the accident occurred. Those injured were from Mysore district, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

School management to face action

HASSAN: President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) Chandrashekar Patil on Friday raided a school in Alur taluk, which was holding classes in English after obtaining permission to open a Kannada-medium school. Mr. Patil, who visited Alur to inaugurate the taluk unit of the KSP, raided the school on the tip off by Kannada volunteers. Mr. Patil said that he had complained in this regard to the block education officer (BEO) who had promised him of initiating action against the school management. — Staff Correspondent

Number of child labourers comes down

DAVANGERE: There were 1,80,000 school dropouts or child labourers in the State two years ago and the number has come down to 80,000 according the Census conducted till March 2006, Manjunath, Labour Commissioner, has said. He told presspersons here on Friday that this had been achieved owing to the efforts by various departments to eradicate the child labour menace. Eight non-governmental organisations which run child labour rehabilitation schools had been blacklisted. Of them, six were in Bangalore and two in Bijapur. — Staff Correspondent

Permission for 205 PU colleges this year

SHIMOGA: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti said here on Friday that the Government had given permission for opening 205 private pre-university colleges this year and proposed to permit 25 more unaided colleges. Addressing presspersons here, the Minister said apart from this, his department had sought approval for opening 100 pre-university colleges and 300 high schools this year.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Power supply will be affected between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday in Shivaganga Layout, Vasantnagar, Arihant Nagar, Suvidha Colony, Nehru Nagar, Naveen Park, Ramnagar, Gandhiwada, Janata Colony, Walwekar Plot, Desai Park, Mallikarjun Nagar, SBI Zonal Office, Keshwapur and surrounding areas, owing to work on charging the underground power cable network, Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a press release.

DHARWAD: N. Ramakrishna assumed charge as Development Officer of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) here on Thursday. The outgoing officer D.R. Swamy, who has been transferred to Mysore, handed over charge to Mr. Ramakrishna, a press release said. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank has increased its interest rates on all its term deposits with effect from June 1. B.S. Surendra, chairman of the, bank said in a press release that senior citizens would get 0.25 per cent more interest on their existing additional incentive rate of interest. — Staff Correspondent

Examination topper

HUBLI: Chandrashekhar Yavagal of Hubli has topped the postgraduate examination in Paediatric Dentistry conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Dr. Yavagal is the first doctor from Hubli to specialise in paediatric dentistry (M.D.S- Pedo). He had won three gold medals in B.D.S. as a student of SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospita. — Staff Correspondent
