BANGALORE: The biennial elections to six seats in the Legislative Council from the graduates' and teachers' constituencies will be held on Saturday. Elections will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Counting of votes will take place on Monday. The six constituencies that are going to the polls are Karnataka North-east, Karnataka South-west and Bangalore graduates' constituencies and Karnataka South-east, Karnataka South-west and Karnataka South teachers' constituencies. Prominent among the candidates are Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy (Karnataka South-west Graduates' constituency) and Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda (Bangalore Graduates' constituency) of the BJP. Mr. Shankaramurthy and Mr. Ramachandra Gowda (graduates' constituency) and Balakrishna Bhat and Marithibbe Gowda (teachers' constituency) are set to retire from the House on June 21. Two seats have remained vacant following the deaths of M.R. Tanga and S. Channabasavaiah. Sixteen candidates are in the fray in Bangalore Graduates' constituency. They are Ramachandra Gowda (BJP), A. Deve Gowda (Congress), Upendra Shetty (JD-S), K.C. Manjunath(JD-U), K.S. Lakshmi (CPI-M), D.N. Nataraj (AIPJD) and 10 independents. The constituency has 64,216 voters. There are 10 polling booths in Bangalore Rural district and 27 booths in Bangalore Urban district and 38 in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike area.
