ALAPPUZHA : Chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the one-year-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Alappuzha Sanatana Dharma College (SD College) at a function at the college auditorium on June 20 at 5.30 p.m., J. Krishnan, secretary of the committee that manages the college, has said. Mr. Krishnan said the college, which was inaugurated in 1946 June 20 by the Diwan of erstwhile Travancore State the late Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer was a continuation of the Sanatana Dharma Vidyasala founded by the Theosophical Society of India in 1905. Mr. Krishnan said the college was the first private college under Kerala University. At present the college has degree level courses in 13 subjects and offers post-graduate courses in eight subjects. The college has at present student strength of 2,200, said Mr. Krishnan. As many as 110 teachers are working in the college. Mr. Krishnan said the college would organise national level seminars as a part of the celebrations. The college would also construct a new library building that could house the books of libraries of various departments in the college, said Mr. Krishnan. K.S. Manoj, MP, would release the jubilee logo. MLA K.C. Venugopal would inaugurate the website of the college. Municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanjan would speak at the function.
