Warning issued against drunken driving

Staff Reporter

Police official says the menace is on the rise in Kollam district

KOLLAM: Kollam Deputy Superintendent of Police T. Reghunathan Nair has warned of strict action against drunken driving, which he said was on the rise in the district.

Those found driving after consuming liquor will have their driving licence suspended. Similarly, the drivers of vehicles involved in accidents which cause deaths will also have their licence suspended.

He said that the action to be taken was as per the rules. "Once the doctor certifies that the driver is under the influence of alcohol, the police will seize the licence and forward it to the Regional Transport Office with recommendation for suspending the licence."

He said that lorries would not be permitted to enter Chinnakada in the city from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on working days. The restriction would be implemented soon.

Lorries coming from Thiruvananthapuram side through the National Highway should take a turn at the SP Office junction, reach Kocupilamoodu, proceed through Pallithottam to reach Lakshminada and from there to enter the highway again at Vellayittambalam.

"Lorries from the opposite direction should also use the same route. The police have requested the highway authorities to place boards at the two points for the purpose. The restriction will come into force once the boards are put up," Mr. Reghunathan said.

He also said that the pre-paid autorickshaw system would be revived in the city. The system had earlier functioned at the Kollam Railway Station and at Chinnakada but was defunct now.

"Once the Legal Metrology Department gives the revised tariff rates for autorickshaws in the wake of the fuel price hike, the system will be revived."
