Edgar Pang, First Secretary, Singapore High Commission, New Delhi, writes:
Please refer to the article, `Tharoor "eminently suitable" for U.N. chief's post' by Amit Baruah in The Hindu on 16 June 2006.
The article mentions that "Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will also be contesting for this office." This is incorrect. Singapore has no candidate for the post of United Nations Secretary-General. The Singaporean Government has formally expressed our support in writing for Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiat Sathirathai Surakiart's candidature in August 2004. In September 2004, Singapore also joined other ASEAN countries in endorsing Surakiart's candidature at the informal ASEAN ministerial meeting in New York.
