Terrorism: nod for signing convention

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday gave its approval for signing the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on April 13, 2005.

The convention, opened for signature at the U.N. headquarters in New York on September 14, 2005, can be signed till December 31, 2006, an official release said. The objective of the convention is to strengthen the international legal framework to combat terrorism.

"The convention will provide the legal basis for international cooperation in the investigation, prosecution and extradition of those who commit terrorist acts involving radioactive material or a nuclear device," it said.

"By signing and ratifying this convention, India will strengthen its credentials as a responsible partner in the fight against terrorism," the statement added.
