Rajahmundry: A rare surgery was done on a nine-year old poor boy Palivela Prasanna Kumar, born with congenital glaucoma, here at Gowtami Eye Institute on Friday.
Unnoticed for long
The boy lost vision in his right eye a few years ago, which went unnoticed by him and his parents. After going to many ophthalmologists, they finally went to Goutami Eye Institute and K. Madhavi, the doctor, diagnosed the child as having uncontrolled glaucoma and opted for `Ahmed Valve Implantation' to control the intra-ocular pressure thereby saving the optic nerve. The child's father, P. Phillip Raju, working as an assistant for a pastor, couldn't afford the expenses but the hospital completed the procedure costing some Rs.20,000 free of cost. Dr. Madhavi is the only surgeon known for doing this kind of implants in the State. According to K. Madhu, chairman of the hospital, the parents of Prasanna Kumar first sought local ophthalmologist's advice, who asked them to go to Hyderabad for further treatment. As they could not afford eye surgery, they sought the help of Goutami Eye Institute.
