CPI(M) eyes 3 ZPTCs

Party regrets Congress implementing World Bank terms

  • Party opposed to fixing of meters to water tap connections and dispensing with the public taps
  • Accuses the Government for awarding bauxite quarries to Zindal Group and refusing reasonable compensation to tribals

Kakinada: Under the electoral adjustment with the Telugu Desam, the district CPI(M) has finally agreed to field candidates only for three ZPTC seats, that too in the agency area, leaving the remaining to the TDP. However, with regard to MPTC seats, the CPI(M) will field its candidates from 50 seats -- 35 in the agency area and 15 in the plains. An agreement to this effect has been reached following talks held between both the two parties.

CPI (M) district secretary Dadala Subbarao told reporters here on Friday that the talks were held with the TDP leaders -- Jyothula Nehru, district TDP president, Gorantla Buchaiah Choudary, former MLA and Babu Ramesh, Yellavaram MLA. He said though the CPI(M) had demanded eight ZPTC seats (four each in agency and plain), finally they had agreed to confine themselves to three ZPTC seats.

Of the three ZPTC seats, Maredumilli and Devipatnam seats were confirmed and the third seat was yet to be finalised. He felt that Rajavommangi seat might be given to them.

    `Only seat-sharing'

Mr. Subbarao made it clear that they did not enter into any alliance with the TDP but only into a seat-adjustment pact. However, he said the CPI(M) and the TDP would work together for all the seats with the sole aim of defeating the Congress.

Giving reasons as to why they had parted ways with the Congress, Mr. Subbarao said that Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy, contrary to his earlier stance, had now started implementing World Bank terms.

Fixing of motors to water tap connections and dispensing with the public taps , spoke volumes of the changed stance of the Government. Moreover, he said, the Government was adopting anti-tribal policies by awarding bauxite quarries to Zindal Group and by refusing compensation to tribals displaced under Polavaram project. He also faulted the Government for not filling vacancies in the Medical and Health Department.
