CHENNAI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has charge sheeted a former All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLA, R. Thavasi, for possessing assets to the tune of Rs.24,42,510, which, the investigating agency says is "disproportionate to known sources of his income." The Special Judge, R. Dakshinamurthy, has taken cognisance of the charge sheet and posted the case for next hearing on July 14. Besides Mr. Thavasi, his wife is cited as the other accused in the charge sheet, which has been filed for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the IPC. In fact, the charge sheet has reached the Special Court a decade after the investigating agency registered the First Information Report in the case. This is the third final report which was filed by the DVAC recently, the others being "disproportionate wealth cases" against the former Forests Minister, K. Lawrence and the former Education Minister, C. Aranganayakam. The cases are among the 46 registered during the earlier DMK rule in the State against former AIADMK Ministers, MLAs, and a few civil servants. With the latest filing, there are at present seven charge sheets pending before the Special Court, located in the Singaravelar Maaligai on Rajaji Salai here. Besides the charge sheets against Mr. Thavasi, Mr. Lawrence and Mr. C. Aranganayakam, the other final reports relate to "disproportionate wealth cases" against the former AIADMK Ministers, Ku.Pa. Krishnan and S. Kannappan, and former MLA, V. Panneerselvam. Another charge sheet is against N. Kasinathan, a retired Joint Director of Collegiate Education (Finance) and four others for alleged irregularities in the supply of laboratory articles to government arts and science colleges and aided colleges. The tenure of the Special Court, which had been extended periodically, ends on September 30.
