THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Water Resources Minister N. K. Premachandran said here on Thursday that the Government would shortly bring a comprehensive water policy to ensure protection of water bodies and drinking water supply. Addressing a press conference here, the Minister said that the consultations for this had already begun. The Government, he said, proposed a comprehensive legislation for protection of water bodies after reviewing the existing legislation. A plan would be drawn up for protecting the sources of rivers and other water bodies. Unauthorised reclamation and encroachments on backwaters and lakes and sand mining would be checked. Mr. Premachandran said that the assistance of Revenue Department would be sought to survey the backwaters and lakes and detect encroachments. Remote sensing techniques would be used for this purpose, if necessary.
