ALAPPUZHA : The action council for the development of Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH) organised a development awareness rally in the town on Friday evening to highlight the need for shifting the hospital from its present cramped building to the newly constructed building on Vandanam campus. Doctors, medical students and a large number of public participated in the rally. People's Doctors Forum State convener Jayaprakash delivered the development message at a meeting held at Kallupalam where the rally ended. Speakers at the meeting observed that though the construction of buildings for shifting the hospital had been almost completed, the authorities concerned were reluctant to shift it. Action council convener B. Mohammed Asheel said the MCH was still functioning in the building of the Alappuzha District Hospital that was converted to the MCH in 1963. He said even 43 years after the hospital started functioning, not many facilities had been added to the college. Limited space in the hospital often forces the authorities to accommodate up to three patients on a single bed, noted Dr. Asheel. Mothers and newborn babies are often forced to lie in the hospital verandah, the speakers said. They said that absence of space was often leading to unhygienic situations also. The leaders demanded that the State Government take immediate action to shift the hospital. A short film made by the action council on the pathetic situation of the MCH was screened after the meeting.
