"Bleakest malnutrition" warned in Somalia
NAIROBI (Kenya):
Fighting between Islamist militias and secular warlords in recent months added to the worst drought Somalia has seen in a decade has created what U.N. officials described Friday as ``the bleakest malnutrition situation,'' in years.
Already, without the fighting, it was difficult to get food aid to Somalia's 1.7 million people facing shortages because of failed rains last year, said the top Somalia officials of the U.N.'s food and children's agencies.
``We must act now,'' said Christian Balslev-Olesen, head of U.N. Children's Fund programmes in Somalia.
