33 booths for today's poll in Bellary

13,373 graduates to exercise franchise in the district


  • Congress submits list of 12 non-graduates enrolled in voters' list to returning officer
  • Returning officer urged to prevent non-graduates from voting
  • Security tightened for election across the district

    BELLARY: A total of 13,373 graduates in Bellary district, which forms part of North-East Graduates' Constituency, will exercise their franchise on Saturday.

    Thirty-three booths have been set up in all taluk headquarters in the district. Ten booths have been set up in Bellary, four each in Sirguppa, Hagari Bommanahalli and Kudligi, five in Hospet, and three each in Sandur and Hadagali.

    There are 4,418 voters in Bellary, 878 in Sirguppa, 1,182 inHagari Bommanahalli, 1,998 in Kudligi, 2,633 in Hospet, 1,030 in Sandur and 1,234 voters in Hadagali taluks.

    Special leave

    Voters in government departments have been granted half-day special casual leave to enable them to exercise their franchise. Those working in banks and industries can seek permission from their department heads/labour officers to exercise their franchise, according to Mohan Muttin, Assistant Returning Officer.

    Meanwhile, Congress leaders have urged Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Arvind Srivastav to prevent non-graduates, whose names have been enrolled in the voters' list, from exercising their franchise.

    List

    M. Pampanna, president of the Kurgodu Block Congress Committee, has submitted a list of 12 persons who, according to him, are not graduates, but have been enrolled in the voters' list. He has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to take steps to prevent them from voting.

    The police have made elaborate security arrangements across Bellary district to ensure free and fair polling.
