ELURU: Congress MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, who has some differences with the Government on the ongoing Kolleru Restoration Programme, said that he took up the issue with party president Sonia Gandhi. He informed this while addressing a gathering of fishermen at his office here on Friday. Mr Rao said he had told Ms Gandhi that the dismantling of fishponds in the lake as part of Operation Kolleru had led to destruction of the livelihoods of scores of fishermen. He wanted the Government to be humane in rehabilitating these affected communities. He said that Ms Gandhi had assured him that she would prevail upon Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on the need to arrange a better rehabilitation package for the vulnerable communities. Mr Rao reiterated his demand for redefining the contour levels of the lake and payment of compensation to fishermen on the land-to-land basis.
