State will not lose MBBS seats: Rosaiah

Special Correspondent

Private colleges asked to improve facilities in line with MCI norms

  • Loss of 25 seats in Guntur Medical College last year attributed to communication gap
  • MCI satisfied with facilities in Government colleges in Anantapur, Tirupati and Kadapa

HYDERABAD: Health Minister K. Rosaiah said here on Friday that none of the medical colleges in the State, Government or private, would lose MBBS seats this year due to deficiencies in faculty, and infrastructure.

Denying reports suggesting loss of nearly 1,350 seats this year, the Minister said that the Government had already interacted with the managements of private medical colleges and taken necessary steps to see that all the seats were retained.

Mr. Rosaiah told reporters that any recommendation made by the Medical Council of India (MCI) following inspection of the colleges was not final as it would have to be approved by the Government of India.

He, however, attributed the loss of 25 MBBS seats in Guntur Medical College last year to a communication gap between the State Government and NTR University of Health Sciences. The college principal had informed the university about this but the latter failed to convey it to the Government.

    Seats saved

He said that the Government, however, saved these seats this year by immediately filling all vacancies of faculty members. A retired professor of cardiology was re-appointed soon after he retired from Kakatiya Medical College, he said.

The Minister said that the managements of private medical colleges in the State had been asked to fill vacant posts of professor similarly and improve facilities in line with the MCI norms.

If any of them were found lagging, the Government would intervene and see that the norms were fulfilled and seats were not lost.

Mr. Rosaiah said that the MCI had expressed satisfaction over the faculty and other facilities in Government medical colleges at Anantapur, Tirupati and Kadapa.
