KARIMNAGAR: A powerloom weaver P. Ashok, 53, committed suicide reportedly due to ill-health and unemployment at his house in Pragathinagar in Sircilla town on Thursday. It was learnt that he had availed of Rs. 1 lakh loan from a micro-finance company. - Staff Reporter

Senior TDP leader joins Congress

NALGONDA: Senior TDP leader Regatte Narasimha Reddy joined the Congress in the presence of Home Minister K. Jana Reddy and Nalgonda MLA K. Venkat Reddy here on Friday.

Welcoming him to the Congress fold, Mr. Jana Reddy said that it was a "very good sign for the Congress" in the run up to the panchayat elections.

Police unearth five landmines

NALGONDA: The Devarakonda police unearthed five landmines at Nakkalagandi thanda in Chandampet mandal in Nalgonda district on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters at the district police office here on Friday, Superintendent of Police M.M. Bhagwat said that a team comprising CRPF jawans and a special party police stumbled upon the powerful landmines during the search operations taken up in the wake of elections. - Staff Reporter

10 policemen injured as van overturns

KHAMMAM: Ten policemen, including two Sub-Inspectors, were injured as the van carrying a special party from Kothagudem to Khammam overturned near Garlaoddu village in Enkoor police station limits in the early hours of Friday. The condition of one of the constables was stated to be serious. The injured persons were admitted to Mamata Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Sworn in APERC member

HYDERABAD: R. Radhakishen, a retired chief engineer of APTransco, was sworn in member of the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) here on Friday.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered to him by A.K. Goel, Special Chief Secretary, Department of Energy, at a brief function at the commission's office at Singareni Bhavan in the presence of K. Swaminathan, Chairman, and others.

PCQuest award for eGovernance solutions

HYDERABAD: eGovernance solutions designed and developed for the Andhra Pradesh Government by the Centre for Good Governance (CGG) got the PCQuest Best IT Implementation Award for 2006.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the CGG's projects that attracted the attention were Model Town and Village Information System and Online Legal Caseload Management System. The awards would be given away in September. - Staff Reporter

VHP decries attacks on temples abroad

HYDERABAD: Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) West Andhra Pradesh unit has hit out at the Centre's "indifference" to damage to Hindu places of worship in foreign countries, including demolition of Krishna temple in Lahore on June 13.

In a statement issued here on Friday, B. Manikyachari, working president, and Ch. Lakshmi Nathacharyulu, general secretary, urged the Government to take up the issue with the Governments of US and Russia where several temples were destroyed in attacks. - Special Correspondent

Congress leader, two others killed in accident

KURNOOL: Congress leader S. Venkatrami Reddy,52, and two others were killed in an accident at Allagadda in Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, Reddy, a close follower of MLA Gangula Pratap Reddy was proceeding in a jeep to Allagadda when the vehicle hit a tree. A Congress worker, Pullaiah, and driver Basha were also killed in the accident.

15 hurt as bridge structure collapses

KURNOOL: Fifteen workers were injured when a structure collapsed at a bridge under construction near Pacharla in Sirivel mandal in Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, the labourers were working on the bridge when the structure collapsed. Three of them sustained serious injuries. - Staff Reporter

Crop loans

TIRUPATI: Indian Bank, the lead bank for Chittoor district, has announced extension of crop loans to all eligible farmers at an interest rate of 7 per cent per annum for crop loans up to Rs.3 lakhs for kharif and rabi.

Announcing the scheme at Chittoor on Friday, bank's Deputy General Manager P.K. Chopra claimed that implementation of the scheme would enable over 30,000 farmers in the district to get loan. - Staff Reporter

1 killed, 6 hurt in road accident

VIZIANAGARAM: One woman was killed and six more were injured when the auto in which they were coming from Tagarapuvalasa to Vizianagaram was hit by a lorry at V. T. Agraharam on Friday morning. Sunandamala, (20), daughter of APSP constable in 5th battalion was rushed to Seven Hills Hospital in Visakhapatnam where she succumbed to injuries. The other injured were being treated in the district headquarters hospital here. The lorry driver was absconding, said SI (Rural) Puli Vijaya Kumar. -Correspondent

New head for Talcher NTPC

TALCHER: Krishna Kumar Sharma has assumed charge as Additional General Manager, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited, Talcher Thermal Unit. He has succeeded Lalan Prasad who has moved to NTPC Ltd., Korba Unit. - Staff Reporter

TDP activists hurt as tractor overturns

VIZIANAGARAM : Over 20 TDP cadres were injured when the crowded tractor in which they were travelling overturned at the Collectorate junction on Friday morning. They were coming in a rally in support of S. Annapoorna who was to file her nomination for M. Ayyannapeta MPTC. The injured were treated as outpatients.-Correspondent
