No consensus at talks with college managements

Special Correspondent

Government to go ahead with legislation, says Education Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The talks between Minister for Education M. A. Baby and representatives of managements of self-financing medical and engineering colleges here on Friday did not yield any concrete results.

Though the managements proposed some packages, no agreement could be reached.

The Minister said the Government would bring in legislation in accordance with its views on the matter.

He hoped the Government would be able to convince the managements on its proposals.

The managements, however, agreed to cooperate with the Government.

While the managements of engineering colleges did not object to admissions to all seats based on entrance examination conducted by the Government, the managements of medical colleges wanted to conduct their own tests for the management quota.

The former have expressed their willingness to concede 50 per cent Government quota in admissions and collect fees on par with those in Government colleges for those seats.

However, they want higher fees for admissions under management quota and are more worried about vacancies on account of minimum marks prescribed by the Government.

They suggested that the fee structure for managements seats could be one proposed during the LDF rule last time. This included a tuition fee of

Rs.50,000 and a refundable deposit of Rs.1 lakh with AICTE fee of

Rs.9,000. Besides, there was a provision for five per cent NRI seats carrying an infrastructure fee of Rs.2.5 lakhs.

The medical college managements are demanding a fee of Rs.3.15 lakhs per seat or a rate fixed by a committee.

The Government should compensate for any fee concessions to students admitted under Government quota, they say.
