Shashi Tharoor's nomination welcomed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has welcomed the nomination of Shashi Tharoor for the United Nations Secretary General's post by the Prime Minister. He said here on Friday that if it succeeded, India's ability to intervene in international issues would increase tremendously. He added that the nomination of a Malayali to such a high post was a matter of pride to all Malayalis. — Special Correspondent

Conference of MLAs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A conference of MLAs of coastal constituencies is to be held in the Durbar Hall of the Secretariat on June 19 in the context of the frequency of sea erosion and the heavy loss caused by it. It will discuss schemes for checking the natural calamity and review the relief work. It will be attended by the Ministers of revenue, fisheries, water resources and local administration and officials concerned. It will also discuss the issues to be included in the memorandum to be submitted to the Centre. — Special Correspondent

Guruvayur Devaswom cancels rank list

THRISSUR: The Guruvayur Devaswom Managing committee has decided to cancel the rank list of mahouts. Devaswom Chairman K.V. Nambiar, in a press release issued here on Friday, said the managing committee has taken the decision as per the recommendations of the Justice Radhakrishna Menon Commission. The Devaswom had appointed the Commission following allegations of corruption and irregularities in the selection of mahouts to the Devaswom early this year. The managing committee has also decided not to revoke the suspension of Trivikraman Nair who is also the managing committee member. — Staff Reporter

Reading competition

KOLLAM: The District Library Council is organising a reading competition at all high schools in the district on June 19. Arrangements for the same had been completed. After the high school level, the competition will be conducted at the taluk level on July 8 and district level on August 6. Cash prizes will be given to the winners. — Staff Reporter

`Lorry stir complete'

KOCHI: The strike called by workers of tanker lorries and LPG trucks was complete in the State, All-Kerala LPG and Tanker Truck Workers' co-ordination committee convener M.E. Ibrahim Kutty said. The strike was called by unions owing affiliation to the CITU, INTUC and BMS, demanding better wages and working conditions for workers.

"The movement of products from oil companies in Kochi was affected because of the strike," Mr. Kutty said. — Staff Reporter

Youth found dead

THRISSUR: The body of Kannan (27) of Karumam near Thiruvallam in Thiruvananthapuram district was found in a tank containing boiling water at the Divine Retreat Centre at Muringoor in the district on Thursday night.

The police said even though the man was rushed to the hospital he was declared dead on admission.

The tank was being used to provide hot water to the inmates for taking bath. The man had joined the retreat centre on May 21. — Staff Reporter

Man kills brother

THRISSUR: A 42-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his elder brother during a dispute between the two at their residence at Poyka near Mala in the district on Friday.

The police gave the name of the deceased as P.A. Thomas. His elder brother Verghese (49), who was seriously injured, has been admitted to a hospital.

According to the reports received by the police, property dispute led to the fight between the siblings. — Staff Reporter

Suicide threat at hospital

THRISSUR: A man threatened to commit suicide after climbing atop a 150-metre chimney of the incinerator at Chest Hospital at Mulankunnathukavu near Thrissur on Friday.

The man appearing to be aged about 40 was seen atop the chimney at about 9 a.m., threatening to kill himself by jumping down. Efforts of the Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police to get him down failed.

Finally, he was brought down by forcing him to sit on a chair-knot reached to him by the fire-brigade personnel who climbed on to the chimney.

The identity of the man was not known immediately. — Staff Reporter
