Clean chit to varsity, but students disagree

Staff Correspondent

Probe by outside agency sought on PMT

SHIMLA: As "widely expected" by the students who were alleging mass-scale irregularities in the Combined Pre Medical Test in Himachal Pradesh, the one-man enquiry committee in its report on Friday gave a clean chit to Himachal University and declared that the authorities had taken all precautionary and preventive steps to conduct the examination smoothly and in all fairness as warranted under the university system.

Describing everything including the mass movement that got underway after alleged leakage and trading of question papers as propaganda, the report said there was no concrete evidence of any education mafia operating in the State.

But surprisingly the enquiry report has directed the University to refer some of the evidences provided by the students to the State Government for further investigations. The enquiry officer, A. R. Chauhan, who was himself the Registrar and Controller of Examinations of the university a few years ago, said some disgruntled people had tried to tarnish the image of the university and had doubted his personal integrity.

On the other hand, students said they were not surprised at the outcome of this "pre-decided" report: "The former Registrar had himself shown his inability to investigate such a deep-rooted fraud in such a short span." He had advised the students to give the evidences to the police rather than to him. "It was eyewash for befooling us and our parents," said the students in a statement here.

"We are sticking to our demand of an enquiry by some outside agency, since we are getting and collecting evidences from all over the State," maintained the students.
