NEW DELHI: In what has turned out to be an embarrassing episode and a setback for the sitting Member of Parliament from Karol Bagh, Krishna Tirath, her close aide and Karol Bagh District Congress Committee president Rajiv Gambhir has been expelled from the Congress party for six years for his alleged involvement and subsequent arrest by the police in a land grab and bank fraud case. "Yes, we have taken action against Mr. Gambhir. There is no place in the party for people indulging in such activities as has been stated time and again by Congress president Sonia Gandhi," said Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma. The party served a show-cause notice on Mr. Gambhir on May 31 accusing him of indulging in unlawful activities involving cheating, forgery and fraud. Further, it was pointed out that on verification of such complaints it was found that an FIR had been filed against him in the Punjabi Bagh police station after which he was arrested on May 5 and released from jail on June 3. The notice said his actions had damaged and lowered the prestige of the Congress and it had been decided to suspend him from the party and the post of acting president of the Karol Bagh District Congress Committee. Mr. Gambhir's reply was found to be unsatisfactory and Mr. Sharma expelled him from the party for six years. The action against Mr. Gambhir has come as a big setback to Ms. Tirath, who had made it a prestige issue before the party leadership to either make her the Karol Bagh District Committee president or her nominee Mr. Gambhir. At that time, the party cadres had strongly protested against the appointment of Mr. Gambhir to the post accusing him of being involved in unlawful activities.
