Staff Reporter

High rate of aedes mosquito found breeding in several areas

NEW DELHI: The threat of outbreak of dengue looms large over the Capital as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has detected a high index of aedes mosquito breeding in several parts of the city.

After its recent drives, entomologists of the civic body involved in anti-malaria operations revealed that there had been an increase in dengue vector mosquito breeding in various localities this month.

The MCD has found a high rate of aedes mosquito breeding in several densely populated areas including Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Saraswati Vihar, Old Rajinder Nagar, Bapa Nagar, Mayapuri, Suraj Park, R.K. Puram, Ambedkar Nagar, Munirka village and Garhi Rindala. There is a possibility of aedes mosquito breeding in other localities also that have not been checked so far, a senior MCD official said, adding that the situation was really serious and urgent steps had been initiated to deal with it.

Pointing out that most of the breeding was found in desert coolers and water tanks, he said several cases were also detected in government offices, educational institutions and commercial complexes. "We have appealed to the administrative heads of all government and semi-government departments, autonomous bodies, educational institutions, owners and occupiers of commercial complexes, office-bearers of various market bodies and residents' welfare associations and citizens to initiate urgent steps to prevent mosquito breeding in their homes, offices and localities," he added.

Warning that the civic body would take strict penal action against occupants of premises where mosquito breeding is detected, the official said according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Malaria & Other Vector Borne Diseases) By-laws, 1975, creating mosquitogenic conditions for mosquito breeding was a punishable offence under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

Stating that the civic body so far had prosecuted 803 people and issued legal notices to 5,417 persons under the Act, he said it was the responsibility of a person occupying a property to prevent mosquito breeding there.
