SALEM: In a pre-dawn operation, the Salem City police on Friday rescued a Chennai-based businessman Ramarao who was abducted by a gang on Monday. Nine persons were arrested and three are absconding. "A delay of even a minute would have cost his life," said Police Commissioner K. Gopalakrishnan. Barring a few bruises caused by the thrashing he received from his abductors, Ramarao (55) was ``hale and healthy'' A special team tracking a mobile phone call reached Thammampatti, about 60 km from Salem, and located the gang in the forests. The Commissioner told the media that the businessman's sons had approached him on Monday saying that they were receiving threatening calls from unknown persons who claimed that their father on a business trip to Salem had been taken into their custody. They demanded a ransom of Rs 7 lakh.
