35 injured as mini-bus capsizes

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Over 35 passengers, most of them school children, were injured when a private minibus turned turtle near the Arani water tank on Friday evening. According to eyewitness account, the 16-seater-bus heading from Arani to Thachurkoot Road overturned after trying to avoid a motorcycle that was coming in the opposite direction.

Dharani, who was standing on the footboard of the crowded bus, said that the vehicle fell off the road and capsized.

"Luckily it did not fall on the footboard side. We got out as soon as the bus started tilting. Most of the children from the Boys and Girls Government Higher Secondary Schools in Arani were caught inside. We brought them out," he recalled. Out of the 37 admitted at the Government Hospital with minor injuries, 30 are aged below 15.
