Special Correspondent
P. Muthuveeran
COIMBATORE: P. Muthuveeran took charge as Commissioner of the Coimbatore Corporation on Friday and began preliminary works to assess problems faced in solid waste management in the city. Apart from a number of other needs of the city, he said there would be a special focus on the `menace of garbage'. This included problems posed by Corporation's compost yard in Vellalore.
e-governance
He is familiar with the civic issues in the entire district as he had been Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Tirupur Region, and had initiated e-governance in the municipalities under his control. On day one at office, Mr. Muthuveeran held discussions with Corporation officials on solid waste management till late in the evening and then had an appointment with the District Collector, Niraj Mittal, on this issue.
Major schemes
The new Commissioner has assumed office at a time when the civic body has very little time before the October local body elections to complete a host of development works and at least initiate major schemes that will take a few years to complete. Mr. Muthuveeran has the unenviable task of keeping the city clean while at the same time not offending the people in the suburbs with compost yards such as the one in Vellalore where there is more of garbage accumulation and burning than disposal.
Pilot project
The pilot project to convert 50 tonnes of waste into manure is also set to take off at the yard. Many of the 535.11 km interior roads and 70 km of roads that are bus routes are in a bad shape and require immediate repairs. The repair works are not taking off because contractors find the Government schedule of rates for labour and construction materials inadequate. They have been pointing out the difference in the market rates and that fixed by the Government as reason for the non-participation in tenders.
Unapproved layouts
Amenities to unapproved layouts and the pursuing of schemes for underground sewers, drinking water and other infrastructure under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission are other issues that are set to become poll planks during the civic elections.
