Staff Reporter

Speedy steps to set up Vizhinjam project

  • Government to acquire Sreepadam Palace
  • Modern bus terminal complex at Thampanoor planned
  • Chitra Art Gallery to get a facelift
  • Proposal to establish centre of good governance

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government will give special priority to the development of a deepwater international container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam, Governor R.L. Bhatia announced here on Friday in his address to the Assembly.

    Good governance

Mr. Bhatia's speech contained several references to the development of the capital region. Prominent among the proposals for the city was the establishment of a Centre of Good Governance (CGG), to improve the quality of public service.

To be set up with the support of the Government of India, the institute will be an autonomous body functioning on the campus of the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) here.

    Transport sector

In the transport sector, work on the revival of the Veli-Kovalam stretch of the TS canal (Parvathy Puthanar) would be taken up this year.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will undertake the construction of a modern bus terminal complex at Thampanoor, a commercial complex at Attakulangara and bus station-cum-commercial complexes at Peroorkada and Kattakada. These revenue-generating projects would be taken up by the KSRTC, with the help of institutional finance.

    Culture

Mr. Bhatia said the Sri Chitra Art Gallery would be given a facelift. The conservation work of the Napier Museum will also be taken up this year under the 12th Finance Commission award.

    Numismatic museum

The Governor said the Sreepadam Palace in the Fort area would be acquired by the Government for conservation and it will be converted into a numismatic museum.

The project is to be implemented by the State Archaeology Department.

The Governor's address also promised to expedite the Capital City Road Development project undertaken by the Kerala Road Fund Board.
