BANGALORE: Two armed men assaulted a van driver and robbed him of a gold chain, a mobile phone and Rs. 700 in cash in Madivala police station limits early on Friday. The police said that around 1.30 a.m. Suresh, driver of a van on hire with a software company, was returning to his house in Roopena Agrahara after dropping the employees. On nearing Garvebavipalya on Hosur Road, two men waved at him seeking a lift. After travelling some distance, the two strangers threatened Suresh with a knife and robbed him of the chain, mobile phone and cash. They punched him in the face, before escaping, the police said. The Madivala police have registered a case.
Man immolates himself
An unidentified man aged around 25 committed suicide by immolating himself in a room on 1st Main, Mathikere, on Friday. The police said four persons had taken the room on rent four days ago. Around 9 30 a.m., three of them went out and the other set himself on fire and ended his life. The Yeshwantpur police have registered a case.
Ends life
A newly married woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Cottonpet police station limits on Thursday. The police gave her name as Kefali M. Taj (21) of Chennai. She had married Sheik Ahmed, a tailor and a resident of 6th Cross, Anjanappa Garden, Cottonpet, a month ago. Around 5 p.m. she hanged herself from the ceiling of the house, the police said. While Kefali had appeared for the final year B. Com. examination in Chennai, her husband is a school dropout, the police said. The Cottonpet police, who have registered a case, are waiting for the arrival of Kefali's parents and have kept the body in the Victoria Hospital mortuary.
Attempts suicide
Following a quarrel with her husband, Saraswathi (37) doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire at her house in Govindarajanagar in Vijayanagar police station limits around 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Saraswathi, who suffered severe burns, has been hospitalised and her condition is critical, the police said. Her husband Venkatesh works in the Planning Department of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. The Vijayanagar police have registered a case.
House burgled
Burglars struck at a house in Hebbal police station limits on Thursday and made away with gold ornaments worth Rs. 50,000. The incident took place between 9.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. at Nirmal Desai's house in Amarajyothi Layout when he had gone to work. The Hebbal police have registered a case.
Vehicles recovered
The Vijayanagar police on Wednesday arrested three of the five persons who were allegedly planning to commit a dacoity and recovered from them two autorickshaws and two car stereos, all worth Rs. 2.50 lakh. The names of the arrested were given as Mehabub (20), Shahjad (19) and Shahjid (18), all residents of Andrahalli Main Road in Peenya. Two of their accomplices, Manju and Nasir, managed to escape.
