Police had information about a consignment of drugs being smuggled into the Capital in a truck

NEW DELHI: Two residents of Jammu and Kashmir have been arrested by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police near the Haiderpur water treatment plant in North-West Delhi on charges of drug peddling. The police claim to have recovered 3 kg of heroin and 30 kg of charas from their possession.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Narcotics Branch) A.S. Cheema, they had specific information about a consignment of drugs being smuggled into the Capital in a truck bearing a Jammu and Kashmir registration number, driven by one Mohammad Amil Malla. Subsequently, they laid a trap near the Haiderpur water treatment plant where the vehicle stopped around 8-30 a.m. on Thursday.

Two of the occupants, later identified as Rauf Ahmed Khan (21) and Ghulam Qadir Butt (36) alighted from the vehicle and were downloading the consignment when they were overpowered. The truck driver, however, jumped off the vehicle and managed to flee. The raiding team reportedly recovered heroin from a polythene bag and charas from a sack the accused were carrying.

Subsequently, Rauf, a resident of Baramullah, and Ghulam, a resident of Pulwama, were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

During interrogation, Rauf allegedly disclosed that he has been in the drug trade for the past few years. The police found that he was also involved in an attempt-to-murder case registered against him at Jallandhar in Punjab where and his accomplices had attacked a police party. Rauf has not been appearing during the court proceedings on the pretext that he is bed-ridden. He allegedly submitted false medical certificate.

Rauf was produced in a local court here that remanded him to 10-day police custody.

His accomplice, Ghulam, allegedly disclosed that he runs a chemist shop at Pulwama.
